XuanBei
Demi-Gods and Semi-DevilsXuanBei is a Shaolin monk whose death links a disputed killing to Shaolin’s efforts to confront the Murong family. His case remains unresolved in the available account: Shaolin suspects a connection to the Murong family’s celebrated technique, while the family’s representatives deny responsibility and promise to address the misunderstanding.
Identity and Shaolin’s Concern
XuanBei is identified as a senior martial monk of Shaolin. When Xu Zhu explains the purpose of Shaolin’s invitation to the Murong family, he names XuanBei as his martial grandfather and says that XuanBei died in Dali. The circumstances of the death are not established here, but its location and the uncertainty around it make the killing central to the temple’s concern.
Xu Zhu distinguishes suspicion from proof. He says that rumors have circulated about people dying through the Murong family’s “Returning you with your own move,” and that, apart from the abbot, Shaolin’s monks suspect the family may be connected to XuanBei’s death. The account therefore presents the technique not as demonstrated evidence against the Murong family, but as the basis of an unresolved accusation.
The Invitation and the Dispute
Shaolin’s invitation calls on Murong Fu to attend the temple on the Chongyang Festival and answer the challenge to the family’s reputation. In the pavilion, Xu Zhu explains that XuanBei’s death is part of the reason the temple has issued the invitation. Feng BoE, a retainer of the Murong family, responds that the matter has nothing to do with his family, but acknowledges that the family cannot fully explain what has happened to persuade its accusers.
The exchange frames XuanBei’s death as more than a private loss: it has become a public test of reputation, evidence, and martial authority. Feng proposes settling the dispute through martial arts, while the invitation itself gives Murong Fu an opportunity to appear at Shaolin and clarify the misunderstandings in person.
The Third Mission to the Swallow’s Basin
Shaolin has already sent emissaries to the Swallow’s Basin three times to deliver its invitation. On the latest mission, XuanNan and XuanTong meet four members of the Murong household by chance and present another red invitation card. Deng BaiChuan accepts it and says Murong Fu will attend Shaolin on the Chongyang Festival, where he can thank the monks and clarify the misunderstandings.
XuanNan immediately connects that promise to the unresolved question of XuanBei’s death, asking whether the Murong family was not responsible. The conversation thus ends without a finding about who killed XuanBei. His death continues to shape Shaolin’s relations with the Murong family and supplies the unanswered question behind the promised meeting.
